Agile Risk Management
Agile risk management is concerned with the identification, assessment, treatment and monitoring of risks in a manner that is consistent with the preferences and principles of the Agile Manifesto (). Whilst the management of risk has always been an inherent aspect of Agile, its practice has often been implicit and limited e.g., a propensity to focus on negative outcomes at the expense of exploiting opportunities. Agile risk management encourages practitioners to consider both upside and downside aspects of risk, adapts traditional risk management practices to the agile context and raises awareness of the social and cultural influence on risk management.
==History==

The earliest reference to the explicit management of risk in iterative product development paradigms (incl. software) dates back to the work of Barry Boehm who introduced the notion of the spiral model to describe an iterative practice of risk identification that is linked to product development and testing. This was later to inspire the notion of risk driven architecture which has since become an established notion in agile development. With the evolution of iterative and agile development techniques, risk management became a central theme of many product oriented approaches (e.g., Scrum (software development), Extreme programming) and was integrated into mainstream agile methodologies such as the Dynamic systems development method. In many cases its practice was, however, implicit with relatively minor accommodation made for agile environments though the link between risk (understood as uncertainty) and learning was clearly articulated.〔Cockburn, A. (2003), How 'Learn Early, Learn Often' Takes Us Beyond Risk Reduction, http://alistair.cockburn.us/Disciplined+Learning〕 Agile risk management was formally researched to understand how risk practices could be applied to different agile processes,〔Nyfjord, J. & Kajko-Mattsson, M. (2007). Commonalities in risk management and agile process models. In Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Software Engineering Advances.〕〔Nyfjord, J. (2008). Towards integrating agile development and risk management. Stockholm: Ph.D. thesis.〕 as well as in the work of Alan Moran who went on to describe an agile risk management process and its applications to various methodologies (e.g., XP, Scrum, DAD and DSDM). This was later followed by more detailed guidance for DSDM that was adopted by the DSDM Consortium.
